BENEFITING: Childrens Alopecia Project
EVENT DATE: Jan 08, 2017
Our son Billy was diagnosed with alopecia at age 6 and lost all of his hair, eyebrows and lashes by the time he was almost 10. We were grateful knowing he was completely healthy and "just had no hair." This meant finding a way to maintain his self esteem while simultaneously getting support for our family. As a parent, you can't help thinking " I can fix this" or "what did I do wrong?" After Billy asked "Can I be done with the cream?" We decided to let him decide what he wanted and follow his lead, to show him that he was more than okay, that surrendering to what is was the best thing for him. Finding Children's Alopecia Project was a blessing in our lives. Meeting others who were on their own journey was invaluable. We took part in ALOPECIAPALOOZA, a camp where kids with alopecia can be themselves and learn from role models and celebrities who take time to speak and make life changing impressions on kids AND parents! We saw the self esteem in our son grow exponentially and it is in huge part to CAP. I am inspired by this group of CAP kids & parents. I will be running the Walt Disney World Marathon 1/8/17 with all proceeds going to CAP and ALOPECIAPALOOZA to get kids in need to a life changing camp for free. It is all about the kids, who have taught me what true strength and bravery are!
