BENEFITING: PACIFIC UNION COLLEGE
EVENT DATE: Sep 28, 2013
Off to Pohnpei! An island of Micronesia which recently gained it's independence in 1986. I will be teaching english through the MAHI program (http://www.mahi-intl.org/MAHI_International/Home.html) to elementary students in order to help develop the island and enable children to have better opportunities later in life. The median income on the island as stated in the year 2000 consensus was $6,354. Much of the low economy is due to the fact that the students are far behind in their english studies which leads to inadequate education and their inability to graduate from high school (22% in 2000 obtained a high school degree and merely 6% with a college degree). Also, on our free Wednesday's I hope to start a small ukelele group to teach the children how to play and enjoy making music.
I will be in Pohnpei for 3 months and am excited to begin working. There will be some time adjustments and cultural differences to become acquired too but with God's help I hope to be a blessing to the people on the island. I have seen amazing things happen when a bit of guidance, a window of opportunity, and the power of love comes into play. Being able to help others and see a new part of the world is one of my dreams and in the end I know I too will be blessed.
Any help towards my fund is appreciated and it is tax deductible! :)
