A Remote Philippine Village Preschool Needs Your Help
Organized by: Myra Baldini
EVENT DATE May 15, 2014
Cawayanan Village Preschool
The ceiling is complete as well as the wall. Cabinets are work-in-progress and should be completed within a month. The teacher is waiting for the internal painting to be done during school break or weekends to allow fumes to evaporate before students can go back and use the school again.
I am asking support to finish the construction of a preschool in my native home, Cawayanan, Miagao, Iloilo Philippines. Cawayanan is a remote village in Panay Island in the Philippines. The preschool also needs cabinets for school stuff, windows, ceiling, hand sink, wall paint, blackboard and floor mats and other teaching/students related materials. There is one teacher and 26 students that are currently enrolled for the upcoming June 2014-April 2015 school year.
Cawayanan Preschool started 11 years ago, with a handful of students from the three surrounding villages Igcaitoon, Igpandan, Igbugo and Cawayanan. The first preschool building was made of bamboo, tin roof and unpaved ground floor. With a small funding from the village local revenue allotment, a small concrete building was constructed in 2003 but was totally damaged by a storm in 2005. Villagers constructed a bamboo hut/school annex to the church as temporary preschool while they plan to construct a permanent preschool.
Beginning 2009, the village was able to budget little by little every year a small amount from its local budget and started to rebuild the preschool. However, since the budget is limited and with conflicting public health and safety priorities, the completion of this building may not likely to happen in the very near future.
The average temperature in the Philippines is 86 degrees F, and goes as high as 90 degrees F during summer time (March-May). During rainy season, the splash from the rain gets inside the school. Also, the school needs proper lighting. A colorful paint will help lighten up the room.
I have collected books from friends, families and from my two kids to donate to the preschool, in addition to crayons, erasers, flashcards for the teacher and other teaching materials. You can also help by donating used pre-school books and unused pieces of crayons. Majority of these kids’ parents will prioritize food for the table than buying craft and school supplies.
Your donation will come a long way to these kids. Thank you so much in advance.
