We are working with every fourth grade classroom in the Merced City School District, for a total of 13 school sites, about 40 classes, and 1,255 students. Rangers from the UC Merced Wilderness Education Center will visit each school site prior to the field trip and lead each class in an activity that introduces the students to Yosemite and to National Parks. On the day of the field trip, the rangers will accompany the students to Yosemite Valley and will lead the students on three short walks. The walks will be themed to teach ecology, geology and hydrology, and American-Indian history. After the field trip, the rangers will return to the schools and will lead the students in an activity that teaches about the threats of climate change to national parks and in the importance of environmental stewardship. Merced City School District is the public K-8 school district that serves the Merced, Ca. The city of Merced is a small urban pocket surrounded by a larger rural agricultural community, and is characterized by high levels of racial and ethnic diversity.
