Arizona Home Inspector Coalition (AHIC) Legislative Fund
Organized by: Arizona Home Inspector Coalition
The State of Arizona has a cost-benefit analysis in-hand and is looking at consolidating regulatory agencies. This process may adversely affect our oversight at the Board of Technical Registration. We anticipate a Bill at the legislature will be introduced in January to initiate major changes to our form of regulation.
Though home inspectors are small in number we have historically been able to avoid legislative trouble by aligning with other stakeholders and intelligently navigating ourselves through the political system. At this time, we feel it is necessary to hire a paid lobbyist to assist us for the 2017 legislative session. In the past we have hired a paid lobbyist for initial licensing and for the pool & spa inspection changes. We have been very lucky over the years compared to other states. Numerous states hire a lobbyist year-after-year for oversight and we have avoided these ongoing costs. This is the year we need outside assistance from a professional lobbyist and your help.
The cost for a lobbyist to begin work immediately and continue through the entire legislative session is anticipated to run between $10,000 to $15,000 total. Our lobbyist is sensitive to keeping the costs down and she loves defending us. We are running a fundraising campaign to pay the price in order to have a voice at the legislature so that we can preserve our businesses.
We were recently at a stakeholder meeting where another profession was ready to ‘throw us under the bus’ had we not been present. The old maxim holds true; “If you don’t have a seat at the table, you are likely on the menu” We need a seat at the table and your help. The lawmaking process can go sideways fast for those without representation at the legislature. A little money paid now can avoid serious financial harm to the home inspection profession within the next year. Now is the time to protect and control our profession, together.
