Shelter for the Arts
Organized by: Chelly Chelly
My name is Chelsea Harris, I am 19 years old. I was raised here in Montgomery County, Maryland, and I have seen my home's cultural interests fade at a decadent level. In 2011, I was abandoned by my family at the age of 15. I was sleeping in public restrooms, and spent most nights and early mornings on the street. I avoided dangerous situations, by spending my time at community centers and libraries. Those experiences opened me up to the value of art and its ability to help a person stay grounded and focused. I have seen many of my homeless friends lose their lives to gang violence, drug abuse, and a lack of opportunities. Currently, I am seeking housing and the chance to benefit my community.
I would like to positively transform the outlets available to my all neighbors, friends, and family; by truly involving youth with an environment that would facilitate creative expression; we will support the community's cohesive nature. This medium is unlike the current outlets which can be very negative, confusing, expensive, and exclusive. Not only would this venue result in a stronger community, those involved will be able to easily showcase their talents and expressions.
Teen and youth have no where to organize, create, or entertain with each other; their strengths go unexplored and under-exercised. In the past Maryland has had a few popular art galleries that quickly go out of style as it can not keep up with the interests of the youth, or displays art for an exclusive community. It is time to offer the public something different. This creative space will be available for communal gathering, where youth can act on their ideas and support the local culture, while building a personal portfolio. This center will house workshops and exhibitions on music, poetry, sculpture, and all forms of display art. I believe that art has the ability to motivate and inspire anyone to channel their energy into productive outlets. All the funding will cover the costs for the building space, and the necessary items to jumpstart this endeavor.
Right now, your contribution will allow me to transform my future living space into a shelter for the local art. If you would like to directly be involved in the project please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or message me on Facebook. Thank you.
