BENEFITING: Art Lovers Place Inc
We will Enhance People's Lives by Inspiring, Encouraging and Nurturing their Creative Spirit.
Hello. I'm Mickey Krause, Founder and Executive Director of Art Lovers Place, Inc. In 1998 I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension due to having a hole in my heart when I was born. The hole was not discovered until I was 26 at which time I underwent open-heart surgery to repair it. Two years later it had to be done again as the hole had opened back up. Pulmonary Hypertension is high pressure in the Pulmonary Artery which causes shortness of breath, fatigue and extra work for the heart causing it to enlarge and ultimately go into Congestive Heart Failure.
I went on disability in 2000 after moving to Florida in 1999. When I turned 50 in 2001, I started pursuing art, painting in particular, and fell in love with watercolor. Art has made a big difference in my life. I am a member of the Florida Watercolor Society and am Vice President and Webmaster for the Largo Art Association. My involvement with LAA has allowed me to give back in a small way.
When I discovered the Art Lovers Place building in 2014 I envisioned it as an art center geared toward others who, like myself, were Seniors or Disabled or Veterans who would benefit from the therapeutic aspects that art can provide when dealing with stress, difficulties and even PTSD. I have been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Pulmonary Hypertension Association to facilitate 4 monthly Paint and Take workshops for PH patients. This project is supported by a Tom Lantos Innovation in Community Service Award. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association's Tom Lantos Innovation in Community Service Award is funded by Gilead.
The building was abused, dilapidated and neglected but I saw it as a blank canvas and a way to give back to the community. It is located in the heart of the Clearwater-Largo Redevelopment District. The building's renovation project has come a long way; the exterior, along with new roof, windows, doors, foundation stabilization framing and hurricane strapping are all completed.
Now it's time to complete the interior.
The full bathroom has been demoed and the new ADA compliant bath has been plumbed and framed.
The HVAC system, electric wiring and plumbing rough-ins have all been completed and passed their inspections.
A second half bath and 3 closets have been framed in.
Cabinets for the kitchen/break room, studio cleanup sink and half bath have been ordered
Next up is Insulation then Drywall.
And the final push will be all the finishes such as lighting, flooring, cabinets, sinks, work stations, furnishings, etc.
Art Lovers Place, Inc. (a FL Not for Profit, 501c3 Tax Exempt Organization) will provide the opportunity for Senior, Disabled and Veterans who are Artists or who want to learn to be artists, to work & thrive. We will offer Classes, Workshops and Special Events for Seniors, Disabled persons and Veterans. Our target opening is October, 2017.
I'm reaching out to friends, family, fellow artists and the community to help me finish this creative space. Please donate.
Thank you for supporting Art and the Community.
