EVENT DATE: Oct 20, 2015
In 2013 Freedom Resource Center for Independent Living launched a new event; the Art of Freedom. The goal for this event was two-fold: To bring awareness to the mission and services the organization had to offer; and provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to showcase their artistic talents. What took place was extremely gratifying. Because of the way the event was promoted, many people created art for the first time and felt comfortable entering pieces in the show. It opened up doors to expression and friendship that would not have taken place otherwise. The sense of pride was tremendous as participants got to see their art displayed in a public show for the first time.
At last year’s event Laura Gerling read a wonderful poem she wrote called “Broken,” which depicted her journey with a disability. Many others expressed their own personal emotions through their work.
Freedom would like to continue to offer this relaxing and fun event free of charge to those who benefit so much from it. There were refreshments, music, and demonstrations to make the event appealing to a variety of attendees. The Art of Freedom is a good community relations event, but it has evolved into much more. The goal we would like to reach for this event is $10,000.
