Art is not offered as a subject or extracurricular activity in Cape Town’s severely disadvantaged black township high schools. SAEP fills this gap for a small group of talented youngsters from four high schools. The excitement the students experience in developing their artistic skills and expressing themselves through drawing and painting is palpable!
Last year Crowdrisers gave and raised $1,000 for a computer for SAEP’s Arts Programme. This will enable us to develop visual presentations and introduce our students to graphic design. Now we are seeking $1,000 again, to be able to send 20 of the most gifted students in our programme for a series of ten drawing and painting lessons at Cape Town’s prestigious Frank Joubert Art and Design Centre during the current school term.
A once-off corporate donation enabled us to send a group of twenty for all four terms of the school year in 2010. This year we must raise the money from other sources to continue this very successful programme. Most will be returning students, but there will be an intake of new ones as well.
For each lesson, we must raise $170, which includes tuition, transport, and a nutritious snack. (It’s hard to teach a hungry child to draw and paint. Many families cannot afford to provide either breakfast or lunch!)
Help our township students learn from some of the best art teachers in Cape Town. South Africa is, after all, the Rainbow Nation!
Donate $20 for a chance to win this beautiful South Africa photo collection!
