Lake County Crisis Center for the Prevention & Treatment of Domestic Violence, Inc.'s Fundraiser:

A Safe Place - Make the Holidays Hopeful

Lake County Crisis Center for the Prevention & Treatment of Domestic Violence, Inc.'s Photo

THE STORY:

A Safe Places helps survivors transform their lives after domestic violence.  This is especially critical during the Holiday Season when needs are particularly heightened.  Please help A Safe Place bring joy to the Holiday Season by supporting our Holiday Store where survivors can select the perfect gifts for their children who have been profoundly affected by abuse in their homes.

As the leading advocate for eliminating domestic violence in northern Illinois, A Safe Place provides emergency shelter, affordable housing, advocacy, and individual and group supportive services to survivors of domestic violence and their children..  A Safe Place also presents education programs to professionals to build awareness of domestic violence, to students in classrooms, and to the community at large. It is our goal that by learning more about domestic violence, its causes, and appropriate responses, we can encourage a comprehensive response to the domestic violence in our midst, breaking the cycle of violence and creating safe and healthy communities. Continue reading to see one of our client's stories (names changed for safety purposes).

Try to imagine your life as you know it - gone.

Your job and income - gone. The safety of your home - gone. All of your savings spent on hiding, and fighting for your life and the life of your unborn baby.

I dated my abuser for just a couple of months. He only "physically" hurt me once or twice before I learned I was pregnant. I went into hiding.

The stress of the abuse was so bad that I was hospitalized for the rest of my pregnancy. While hospitalized, I lost everything: my business, my home, and everything inside it.

Soon, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy - Nathan. Two short weeks later, we were released - homeless, with only what I had in my car.

It was the collaboration of many homeless shelters and programs in Lake County that helped me regain my identity and my life. Once I made it to A Safe Place's supportive housing program, I realized that I was where I needed to be. The supportive housing and programs offered on site at A Safe Place, like family counseling and child support groups, are designed and geared for adults and children who have specifically been through the very dark moments of abuse.

Now imagine if all those services had not been available to help my tiny baby and me. The way things were going, at some point Nathan and I would have been hungry and looking for an abandoned building to live in.

Now, because of the support of A Safe Place and so many others, I am building a stronger foundation for our future without fear of being put out into the streets and, best of all, I can look forward to holding all of my children again.
