BENEFITING: Save the Children
We are raising funds to add four more classes to Ababu's school, so that she can stay at school until the 8th grade. Ababu is a young Ethiopian girl whom we have been sponsoring for a while, and whom we have met twice. She is 11, and No 10 in a family of 12 kids.
She lives in the region of Dendi (west of Addis Ababa) and goes to the Wenchi Biti school.
As of now the school, which was built and equipped, and is run by Save the Children, only accommodates four classrooms, so kids can only get four years of education there. We are attempting to raise funds (US $ 50,000) for the construction of four more classrooms, so that Ababu and the kids in her community can complete their primary education.
Currently, the only solution beyond grade 4 is a school which is a 1.5 hour walk away from Ababu’s community. Some of the boys do go to that school. Generally, girls have to stop school after their fourth year. Consequently, they are often married at a younger age than if they had been able to complete 8th grade.
At the end of this month (30 March) we are off trekking for a week in Nepal, in the Annapurna region. While the prospect of hiking in such awesome landscapes is exhilarating in itself, we will use the challenge of this 50-mile trek to raise funds for Ababu's school.
You may want to sponsor one of us to the tune of $1 per mile (total $50), or all three of us (total $150), or one of us for $10 per mile (total $500), or just state the amount you wish to contribute to the project. Thanks in advance for being part of this!
