THE STORY:

As many of you know I just returned from Africa. I arrived at my placement at an orphanage in Kumasi, Ghana after dark on a Sunday night. As I was meeting the owner, a woman came running up the road shouting that someone had left a new born baby at the gate of the orphanage. Even though the orphanage is already over maximum capacity, he took the newborn child in, still covered in blood from the birth, and began caring for it. The owner, Jim, said it was a sign from God that we both arrived at the orphanage on the same night, so he gave me the honor of naming this child, who I named Sean. Now I feel it is my responsibility to make sure this child is taken care of.

This is just one story, one child. There are 60 children that call Ashan their home. The orphanage is a wonderful, positive environment for the children to grow up in. While the poverty level in Ghana is high, each child at the home is well dressed an fed and each child attends school. Considering the home runs almost solely on donations with no help from the government, Jim has done a phenomenal job of maintaining and expanding the place.

There are 4 babies in the baby ward and 3 dormitories for the other 56 children, which are very over crowded. The children share bunk beds and some sleep on the floor. The government has said that by the end of 2010, all orphanages must begin construction to convert all dormitory style orphanage housing to family style housing units. This means that instead of all of the children sharing 3 large rooms, 10 children must be in a family style house with one of the "mothers" of the orphanage, and each house must have its own kitchen and bathroom with running water.

This will be a major improvement for the kids of the orphanage to have running water and electricity available to them, but it will obviously come at a huge cost. I have pledged to help raise $5,400, the cost of one house. Below you can find the proposal and breakdown of the money.

Even though the poverty level there is very high, the spirits of the children and the families that I worked with while I was in Ghana were even higher. As a teacher, seeing how eager some of these children are to learn and to go to school was just inspiring, yet heart-wrenching. If only I could help them get the resources they need their work ethic and dedication to education would surely do the rest. Please help me build the environment these children need to fulfill their full potential.
