Joy, 14 Burkitt’s lymphoma I wish to go to Hawaii to swim with sharks Daniel and Johanna welcomed their daughter, Joy on February 5, 2001. They were thrilled to bring her home to El Dorado Hills to join her older brother, James. In January 2015, Joy began to frequently feel ill, and was growing weaker each day. She began to have difficulty breathing, and Daniel and Johanna brought her to the emergency room for evaluation. Joy was diagnosed with pneumonia, however her symptoms never eased and her condition continued to decline. Scans and x-rays were conducted and revealed that Joy had multiple tumors in her lungs and abdomen. She began chemotherapy treatment and despite the remaining presence of the masses, Joy is on the road to recovery. She was excited to return to school in the fall of 2015. Joy likes the color pink, reading The Red Kayak, soccer and dogs. She enjoys visiting San Diego with her family, eating pasta and Mongolian BBQ, and watching “Pretty Little Liars.” Joy loves going to the mall with her friends, studying math and listening to Selena Gomez. For her wish, Joy narrowed all of her ideas down to the top two. Joy considered wishing to have an article published in Seventeen Magazine, because she dreams of someday becoming a spokesperson for childhood cancer, and thought that publishing a magazine article about her experience would be an excellent platform to begin making an impact. After much thought, Joy decided that her first choice in a wish would be to visit Hawaii and swim with a shark! No one in Joy’s family has ever been to Hawaii, and she would cherish the opportunity to experience the island paradise for the first time together. If this wish is granted, Joy dreams of snorkeling, eating delicious food at a luau and, of course, seeing a shark up close! She can’t imagine creating any of these memories without her family by her side. “After our cancer ordeal, our family is a lot closer,” Joy said. After all they have been through in fighting her condition together, Joy can’t wait to share her unique experience with the people she loves!
