On October 19th, the organization I work for, SHELTER, Inc., will be hosting their 5th annual HIKE FOR SHELTER event on Mt. Diablo. The event is a fundraiser to help support the numberous services the organization provides for homeless families in Contra Costa County. As one of the largest housing and services providers in the county, SHELTER, Inc. is critical in helping homeless men, women and children get off the streets and into homes of their own. Although we serve single adults as well, 70% of our clients are families; many with young children.
When I first began working for the organization 6+ months ago, I was shocked to see children come into our emergency shelter without shoes and hear stories of families living in tent and cars. Their stories make me feel strongly about how important our programs are for in giving them hope for the future. And although we served over 4,000 people last year, there are still many more we simply don't have the resources to help.
I hope you you'll register to join my hiking team and help raise awareness and support for the many individuals in need in our community! There are trails options of varying difficulty to choose, from easy to the whole 6.8 miles to the summit of Mt. Diablo. There is a small fundraising goal for groups, with your registration fees applied. For a group of 6 people, its only $58/ person! If you can't hike, please consider donating to my fundraiser. SHELTER, Inc. is hosting its Fifth Annual Hike for SHELTER to end homelessness in Contra Costa County on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Mt. Diablo State Park in Danville.
Hike for SHELTER is for all ages and abilities, from walkers to seasoned hikers. We are offering three trails, from a 2.4-mile family hike to a 6.8-mile summit hike! A post-hike celebration will follow complete with lunch, music, crafts, a former client speaker and fundraising prizes.
