Ashley's Volunteer Trip to Africa
Organized by: Ashley Thibeault
Hello friends and family,
As some of you may know, I recently graduated with my Medical Biology degree from the University of New England and I am currently pursuing an accelerated Bachelors degree in Nursing.
I am excited to announce that I applied and was accepted into a 2 week healthcare program traveling to Ghana, Africa this summer. I will be going with other UNE students to set up healthcare clinics in cities with extreme shortages of medical resources. I will engage in direct health services and community education programs during my time there. Essentially, I get to practice the skills and apply the knowledge I have been working so hard to master through countless hours of studying!!
The reason I decided to attend nursing school was deeply rooted in my desire to have a positive impact in peoples lives. The possibility of experiencing another culture and utilizing my growing expertise is not only rewarding to me but will provide comfort and relief for so many people.
UNE has been doing this trip for multiples years and has seen hundreds of patients every visit. The people being treated are commonly diagnosed with overuse injuries, open wounds and infections along with malaria. The approximate cost of the trip is over $3000 so any donations will help with the price of immunizations, airfare, lodging, supplies etc.
As with many college students, my school loans have accumulated over the years but I refuse to pass up an opportunity such as this. Any donation is greatly appreciated and will help me broaden my horizons as not only a nursing student, but as a human being.
If you can't donate, I encourage you to share this post and I plan to share pictures and stories upon my return of what I am sure will be an inspiring 14 days of my life.
Thank you all so much!
