I chose to run the St. Jude Half Marathon for Project Purple as the perfect way to honor my beautiful mom. My mom was a kindergarten teacher for 31 years. Children were her passion. She lived to teach and care for children as if they were her very own. In November of 2013 my mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She underwent surgery and started her first round of chemo on December 31, 2013. After six months of chemo we were told the cancer was gone. In July of 2014 she began to feel ill again. After some tests it was determined that the cancer was back and had spread to her liver. At this point surgery was not an option. The only way to fight it was through chemo. She endured several types of chemo but none of it would control the growth. In January of 2015 we were told the chemo was no longer working. We went on our way and tried to make some great memories with the very little time we had. In March she began to slow and feel very weak. Just after her birthday on the 3rd she got worse daily. I was able to take some time off work and be right by her side the last week of her life. It was awful to see her go through this. She was such a fighter though. Such an inspiration. She passed away on March 16, 2015, just 16 short months after being diagnosed. No one should ever have to go through what my amazing mom went through! I'll always fight for her! This is the least I can do. I hope that together we can make a difference!
