For the last 14 years, I have been volunteering my time with this amazing organization that works incredibly hard and has tremendous passion for helping women and children survivors of violence. When I started, I answered a hotline on weekends picking up calls from Asian women faced with domestic violence and with no where to go. Today, our staff also serves all survivors of human trafficking and sexual assault in the Asian community and beyond. Through a humble and Asian-inspired holistic approach to counseling, community services, ESL and job training, art therapy for children, and residential services (to name a few), we are committed to changing the lives of women and their children. The transformative work that we do helps these women and children heal and get back to a sense of normalcy, leaving behind fear and wielding new skills that our staff shares so that survivors can live independently and free from violence. I need help from my community to help this community. But in fact, as I write this, I realize we are in fact just one community, where some of us have the ability to help others bravely step into the light. As I have met our clients over the last several years, I have been floored at how much these women and children are just like us, despite the pain, uncertainty and fear they have had to endure. We are parents who want our children to be safe. We are children studying for the SATs. We are all people who want our mothers and sisters to live free of violence. And through it all, we are people who have the capacity to love. So I am asking you, my friends and colleagues, to help me help them. On October 6, we are celebrating 33 years of hard work at our anniversary Gala, and I would love to have you by my side. But if you can't be there, I also would appreciate your kind contribution. Thank you for your support and compassion!
