We are raising funds to support elders and their caregivers across Alaska, those like Annie. When Annie walked into Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska, she was at her wit’s end. Her once happy and successful father was having difficulty remembering words, names and recalling familiar places. He was growing frustrated, over anxious, and he would wonder off, leaving the house in the middle of the night on more than one occasion. Hank loved to read; often finishing a book in a day, now he cannot follow three paragraphs into a novel or choose what to eat from a menu. Hank has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’ disease. All of us have moments when we feel overwhelmed by life – when it all seems like too much. For most of us, those moments pass, and we move on with our daily lives. However, for some of our neighbors, like Annie’s father, those moments can stretch into weeks, months and years of declining abilities. Annie knew she had to get help fast – for both her father and herself. Within hours of turning to Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska, Annie received counseling and support from our compassionate, professional staff. She received information that is vital for someone in her situation. Annie has joined a support group where she can receive helpful tips and information from those who have experienced similar circumstances. Annie’s family members are enrolling in the Savvy Caregiver class; there they will spend six weeks receiving the skills they need to ease Hank’s confusion and gain valuable tools to adjust to this otherwise lonely and frustrating process. To assist those like Hank we are asking you to make a financial investment, and work with us to sustain our services throughout Alaska. Together, we can support Alaskans struggling through the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
