THE STORY:

ASSOCIATED HUMANE SOCIETIES INC wrote -

At Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park, we take animal sheltering and care to a whole new level. We opened our Forked River, NJ facility in 1976 with the intention of being a dog and cat adoption center but over 40 years, we have become so much more for animals of all species, breed, size and circumstance. Our animal shelter is a temporary home for approximately 100 dogs and 200 cats, but that's just a part of what we do...

We also have a retirement home for dogs called Animal Haven Farm, where dogs with different medical or emotional issues can live out their lives in peace and comfort. They enjoy large living quarters and huge yards to roam and play in, and plenty of people that love and care about them too.

We are the home to Kitty City, a retirement home for cats that have come from sad circumstances such as an abusive home, or an animal testing lab, or maybe their owner passed away. They live in a beautiful two-story room with tiled floors, comfy furniture, skylights, lots of windows to gaze out of, and an outside fenced area where they can sit on a nice, sunny day. These cats, and the dogs in Animal Haven, are permanent residents and many of them are in their teens now and feeling the stress of old age, but we do everything in our power to keep them as comfortable and happy as can be.

We also operate Popcorn Park Animal Refuge which is home to exotics, wildlife, and farm animals that were neglected, abused and abandoned. We have everything from lions and tigers, to tortoises, deer, and bears. Every animal in Popcorn Park came to us in need of help and we never turn anyone away. We provide medical treatment for the animals in our refuge that suffer from arthritis, joint deformities, ocular diseases, just to name a few of the medical maladies that our residents receive treatment for.

Even the dogs and cats that come to us seeking help and a chance at a fresh start in life after being given up by their families receive all of the medical care that they need. Sometimes it is as simple as vaccines and spaying and neutering, other times it's much more involved......the involved cases are where we need help.

Just a few of the examples of the kind of cases that come through our doors are: Vinnie Van Gogh, a pit bull puppy that was used for bait in dog fighting, brought to us near death with his ear ripped off, his hips broken, and in septic shock from severe infections in the massive wounds that he sustained in his legs and body. Liesel, a German shepherd puppy that was either hit by a car or a baseball bat, completely unable to walk when she arrived. Liesel sustained a broken leg and brain damage. Leo, a Tibetan mastiff that was imported from China only to be left outdoors for the first year of his life, completely neglected. Leo suffered with severe ocular disease that caused him blindness, and suffered with severe skin infection, joint disease and Wobbler's Syndrome. These are just three examples of the countless special needs cases that come to us for help.

All of these cases involve extensive medical treatment which we provide, thanks to help from our donors. Many times physical therapy is needed after surgery and medical treatment is completed and as we do not have the equipment at our facility for such therapy, we must take our animals to off-site facilities to receive treatment which is very costly. We would love to raise enough money to purchase our own therapy equipment which would help not just in the cases mentioned above, but with many of our animals that suffer from various chronic conditions throughout our facility. Please help us to raise the funds needed to purchase some high-tech therapy equipment that would enable us to heal more animals in need. Thank you, as always, for your generous support.
