I recently read a story about Dick and Rick Hoyt (I know, great names). A father and son team who compete together in marathons and triathlons across the country. Rick has Cerebral Palsy. Their story truly inspired me as my brother has Muscular Dystrophy. After reading their story I knew that I wanted to help. I might not be able to tow my brother in a dinghy or pedal him on any bike but I certainly will run for him and the organization he loves, the Association of Horizon.
The Association of Horizon is an organization with hundreds of volunteers, that provides opportunities for adults with and without physical disabilities to socialize, interact and learn from one another. Although Horizon has existed for many years, the current organization was formed in 1992 in response to a cut in funding that kept adults with disabilities from attending the Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camp. Horizon has since successfully produced Summer Camp Programs for adults with a wide range of physical disabilities including Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Sclerosis.
The cost of camp is $800 per camper and our goal is to send three people to camp. I will be running in the Fox Valley Half Marathon on September 22 for the Association of Horizon - mind you this is my first half marathon but I'm counting on this fundraiser to give me the motivation I need to finish!
We are very grateful for any donation! Thank you!
