BENEFITING: BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA
EVENT DATE: Sep 17, 2017
For the last 25 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Central Virginia has been providing area youth with programs to help them become responsible citizens and tomorrow's leaders. The Club enrolls over 2000 children in various programs that give them the skills and confidence to succeed in Life and to be Leaders. If you visit the website you'll see the breadth and depth of what the Clubs offer and how vitally important it is. (http://bgclubcva.org). Each Summer I see this up close with the kids that participate in the Cycling Challenge. Each Spring, a group of B&G Club members, aged 12-18 sign up to participate in the Ride. They receive a road bike, helmet and gear. For some, it is the first bike they've ever owned. But come September they will be capable of riding 25, 50, 75 or even 100 miles in the Cycling Challenge. Through the Cycling Challenge, these kids get the opportunity to dream - for real - and to accomplish. They practice great Life skills - responsibility, discipline, dedication and focus - which permeate every area of their lives. And, they realize, for themselves, that they're winners. That they can do things that they once may have only dreamed about. And, most importantly, that it's not magic. It's within them. It's hard to describe how inspiring it is to witness it in person but suffice it to say it's amazing and humbling.
