BENEFITING: ATLANTA TAIWANESE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 15, 2014
Dear family and friends,
Atlanta Taiwanese Association of America (ATAA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to foster cultural awareness, community service, and to develop social networks among the Taiwanese community of the greater Atlanta area. As President of the organization this year, we have decided to relaunch our Youth Scholarship after several years on hiatus. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize Asian-American students in the southeast for academic achievements, community & cultural service, and athletic excellence.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the scholarship so we can award high-achieving students for the next several years. We already received a grant of $4k from a sister organization and now have $6k to go!
What does it mean to be Taiwanese-American? Many people confuse it with Thai, or consider it "like Chinese." However, Taiwanese-Americans are lucky to embrace their own culture and identity. There are many powerful Taiwanese-Americans in a variety of industries that are out and making a difference in our world: Steve Chen (co-founder of YouTube), Jerry Yang (co-founder of Yahoo), Tony Hsieh (CEO of Zappos.com), Ang Lee (Oscar winning Director of Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Life of Pi), Lucy Liu (Actress), Elaine Chao (US Secretary of Labor under Bush Administration), Jeremy Lin (NBA player), Alexander Wang (fashion designer), Jason Wu (fasion designer), just to name a few. But we need MORE! We need to support the next generation of students to achieve their highest potential.
Why should I donate? We invite you to donate to this great cause in support of the students. Remember- no donation is too small! Most people are giving $10 but any effort will help us achieve our goal of 10k. Together we can promote and award excellence. Who knows- with your help, we could be supporting the next great doctor, engineer, or even President of the United States!
But WHY should I donate? Imagine a high school graduate who is deciding between her state school with a full scholarship or Harvard University with a partial scholarship. As a community, we want her to succeed in any way possible and if a little financial benefit can make a life-changing difference, we should support that in any way we can! Imagine the possibilities we get to open up for the student! And whether or not you are Taiwanese, American, Taiwanese-American, or of other cultural or ethnic identity, you understand the responsibilities of being a global citizen and fostering excellence in today's young people.
OK! How do I donate? You may donate quickly on this site or you may make checks payable to:
5008 Buford Hwy, Suite C
Atlanta, GA 30341
On behalf of the organization and our Board of Directors, we graciously THANK YOU so much for your generosity and support!
*ATAA is run entirely by unpaid volunteers
**Charitable donations to 501(c)3 organizations may be tax-deductible.
