Resilient Super-Mom, her super-children and the Land Down Under
Lives: Syracuse, NY
Dream Destination: Australia
Travel Companion: 2 kids and her mother, Kathy
When someone says “Super Mom”, most people picture a woman a lot like Glenda. She is a pillar of support in her community. She works at Exceptional Family Resources in Syracuse, NY, providing support to families and individuals living with disabilities. Her ultimate goal is to enhance lives and to foster community acceptance; a goal with a great deal of personal importance.
Several years ago, Glenda found herself in an unhealthy relationship and left her home, along with her two young children. At the same time her son was experiencing significant developmental delays; he was eventually diagnosed with autism coupled with severe ADHD.
She worried about her son’s future, his ability to make friends, to live on his own. She wondered how would her daughter cope – would she get the time and attention that she deserved? Glenda’s dream of a “normal” life was shattered. She realized that she would need to find a “new normal” for the sake of her children, and for herself.
She discovered tools and strategies that helped her to shift her son’s unwanted behavior. One such technique is called the Nurtured Heart Approach. According to Glenda, you can always find something that is going well, in any moment. If you react in a positive way to the good behavior, it will increase, building something they call “inner wealth”.
Glenda works hard to support her family’s needs. “I do the job I do, not for the money, but because I know the impact it makes to others” she told us. She skips meals just so she can give her kids the best support money can buy. There’s no money left for special trips or vacations.
Glenda’s son has an uncanny knack for geography. His talent for reading maps and charting directions thrives on planning schedules and timetables, playing with globes and scanning time zones. Sadly, her son has never had the opportunity to show off his passion in a way that would take him to a whole new world. She dreams of taking him and the rest of the family to Australia, but has never considered travel a possibility.
Through her work and volunteer initiatives, through her unflagging support of her family, Glenda has found an “inner wealth” beyond imagination. But her material wealth has yet to catch up. So give a little to someone who’s given so much; help Glenda and her family explore the world and nurture their dreams.
