BENEFITING: Advocates For Responsible Care Inc
EVENT: The March For Science
EVENT DATE: Apr 22, 2017
When I was in high school, I decided on a career as a scientist because I was curious and nerdy. I didn't know for most of college what I was doing with my life. After college, I found a direction. I wanted to work to stop problems caused by infectious diseases.
My mother had the misfortune of acquiring an infection during pregnancy, a circumstance which changed my family's lives forever. My brother had severe birth defects, and consequently my parents had sizable medical bills. Throughout my brother's life he was faced with his peers ridiculing him/asking him about his fingers and his legs. This one little cold my mother got once is not something not any of us can ever really forget.
Because of the profound effect an in utero infection had over my family, I pursued a career in the infectious diseases, and now work as a technical copyeditor for the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, helping communicate information about emerging infectious diseases in animals and humans that occur all over the world to help control the further spread of infectious agents. Part of the work that I do (I believe) is helping prevent children from suffering similar fates as my brother.
I'm terribly concerned about political ongoings and the threats to repeal and replace the healthcare system. With talks to end Obamacare comes the ending of CDC funding that is helping fight infectious diseases and outbreaks. With a reorganization of NIH funding could also come the end of my job.
I march to stand up for the importance of infectious disease research. My career is terribly important for the well being and health of the people in this country.
