EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
It is an honor to be a member of the Atrius Health Foundation Marathon Team! Many years have passed since I first dreamed of running a marathon. For so long this dream seemed an impossibility but a year ago I made a promise to myself that things would be different and started running, one step after another. I am not fast but I am extremely determined and with your help I will be successful.
I love Marathon Monday; some years I have had friends running, some years I didn’t know anyone, but always I have always stood on the sidelines, calling out names written on shirts, yelling extra loud for the military runners, the Hoyts, and anyone running for a loved one. A highlight of last year’s marathon came when one of one of the elite women racers, Ariana Hilborn, tossed her water bottle at us after her fuel stop. Her bottle was festooned with ribbons, and labeled with her own motivational mantra: “today I will be extraordinary.” I have adopted this as my own motivational statement, as a reminder of where I am, and where I want to be next year.
My hope is that you will join me on this amazing journey. You can follow the highs and lows of training on my blog. There will be opportunities to sponsor a long run, get your name printed on my shirt for race day, and learn more about the Atrius Health Foundation.
I am not running the marathon because of the bombings, even with the emotions it stirs in my heart. I want to run the marathon as a thank you to my city, my adopted hometown, where I met my wife, where my son was born. I want to run because the monies I raise will make it easier for people of Boston and beyond to be healthy, to someday take their own first steps towards a healthier life, towards a goal that might seem unachievable. On Monday, April 21 I will be extraordinary, and so will my city.
