Attendance Matters in the Big Easy
Organized by: Aimee Lyons
1 in 10 kids in kindergarten and 1st grade are chronically absent. In some schools, it's as high as 1 in 4. If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. In New Orleans Parish, 21% of students miss over 20% of their school days. This leads to low academic achievement, higher risk for behavior concerns, and has strong correlations to negative outcomes in middle and high school (drop out, involvement in juvenile court, etc). Families in New Orleans face numerous barriers to getting their kids to school everyday, like lack of transportation, chronic health issues, unaddressed mental health issues, and unstable housing. To provide incentives for families this year, we are fundraising for things such as gas cards, bus passes, grocery gift cards, and uniform shirts to assist our families in whatever ways we can to get their kids to school every minute of every day!! Good attendance habits have the power to transform communities. We need your help!
