ABOUT THE ARTIST, DENNY DENT - Dent was an American speed painter who was known for his frenetic performances painting large portraits of celebrities. During a Dent performance, which he referred to as a “Two-Fisted Art Attack,” he rapidly painted on a large canvas with multiple brushes in both hands, and also painted with his bare hands, to musical accompaniment. Over the course of just a few songs, he could complete a portrait. We have a letter of authenticity from James McLellan, who was Mr. Dent’s tour manager. Mr. McLellan evaluated the painting based on a photograph and notes that the painting includes “the distinctive handprint in the left corner of the painting; many times, Mr. Dent considered this his ‘signature.’ Also this painting has his double signature, where Mr. Dent would sign with both hands to produce a mirror image signature. This is a well maintained and excellent example of Mr. Dent’s work.” Estimates (based on digital images) of the work’s value range from $1,800 to $7,500, but these figures do not constitute a guarantee.
ABOUT ROOM TO READ - Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, Room to Read’s innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools in low-income countries during two time periods which are most critical in a child’s schooling: early primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ education. We work in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and to ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. Room to Read has benefited 10 million children across 17,500 communities in Asia and Africa and aims to reach 15 million children by 2020.
Room to Read has earned many awards since its inception, including the Library of Congress Literacy Award, the Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the UNESCO Prize for Literacy. In 2014, Room to Read Founder John Wood was honored, along with Malala Yousafzai, by the World’s Children’s Prize (often called the Children’s Nobel Prize). Room to Read has earned Charity Navigator’s highest 4-star rating for financial accountability and transparency for nine consecutive years – an honor that only 1% of their rated charities can claim.
