BENEFITING: St. Johns Riverkeeper
Aura Salon is raising funds to support our local river, and the organization that keeps it flowing! All proceeds raised will directly benefit the St. John's Riverkeeper located in Jacksonville, Florida. Here are the issues affecting the St. Johns that the St. John's Riverkeeper continue to take the lead on: *Advocating for more water conservation as an alternative to proposals to withdraw millions of gallons of water a day from the St. Johns; *Working to enforce more protections for our river as the result of the proposal to dredge the channel to a depth of 47 feet; and *Litigating permit approvals for Sleepy Creek Lands, a grass-fed cattle operation adjacent to Silver Springs in the heart of its protected springshed. Last year, the St John's Riverkeeper accomplished the following goals: In Education, we *provided programing for 3,472 students; *worked with Clay County schools and Coca-Cola to convert 130 syrup barrels into rain barrels and distributed them for free in the community; *established a field trip program with the Duval County School Board to take 4,500 5th grade students out on the St. Johns River for a river science learning experience. At events, we *Tracked our participation at over 123 events, totaling nearly 600 signatures for more information, to become a volunteer, or to become a part of our Rising Tides, River Patrol or Education networks. *We hosted 42 boat trips, bringing 2,321 individuals on the river with us and 4 kayak expeditions. *Our volunteer network logged more than 1,980 hours in service from 677 active volunteers. *We hosted or organized 27 cleanups, bringing 1,088 volunteers to the cause. *Our River Patrol logged more than 100 hours on the river this year filling out 80 reports on the visible conditions of the St. Johns and its tributaries, helping us to be the eyes and ears on the water in places where our staff can’t always be.
