When APA! started rescuing animals in 2008, Austin was somewhat rich in resources that prevented births. For almost ten years, more and more resources were put into spay and neuter programs, but the live outcome rate at our city shelter hovered around 50%.
Austin Pets Alive! saw an opportunity to directly increase the live outcome rates from the shelter by saving animals most likely to be euthanized. As it turns out, there are certain demographics of animals who are much more likely to be euthanized than others. By creating innovative programs designed to save these animals specifically, APA! led the movement in increasing the live outcome in Austin. We have since been a critical element in making and keeping Austin no-kill.
