Austin's Musical Journey to Europe
Organized by: Nancy Peterson
November 09, 2016
Austin is a high school senior, and has been invited to accompany the 2017 Voyageurs International group to perform as part of a band visiting in seven European countries. The students participating in these journeys are talented musicians seeking to perform for their audiences while experiencing the unique culture of each country. Such an awesome opportunity for a young music student, determined to make the world a better place through his music! At an early age, Austin took piano lessons for three years. When he entered middle school, his band director asked him to play clarinet, which he did. He did so well that the next year he was asked to try the bass clarinet. In high school, Austin continued his musical aspirations by learning to play guitar, and by joining concert band, jazz band, marching band, theatrical musicals and chorus. His versatility with musical instruments has earned him several opportunities to "fill-in" where needed, sometimes playing drums and other percussion parts. His goal is to become a music director upon graduating college. Austin completed every rank in Cub Scouts, and is now at Life rank in Boy Scouts. He is juggling all his school and musical activities with trying to complete his Eagle Scout project and high school senior project. It's a busy time for him, but he continues on enthusiastically. And now, I'll explain the need for this fundraising page. I'm his mom, and have been a single parent all of his life, working full time to give him the best opportunities I could. I conquered breast cancer in 2003, and continued to support us. I retired from my 39-year civil service career in 2015, thinking I would stay home and enjoy retirement. But seeing how much this trip would cost, I re-entered the work-force, taking two part-time, minimum wage jobs to save for his trip. Life has a way of changing your best plans. Things were going well until I was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer this past July. I underwent surgery and am now on a hormonal therapy treatment to try and inhibit the growth of any additional cancer - it will never be completely gone, but it is treatable. Surgery and treatment have depleted the savings I was planning to use for Austin's trip. My dream has been to provide this opportunity for Austin, and we could sure use your help. I'm still working both jobs, and trying to save where I can, but we can't do it alone. If you can find it in your heart to help, we would be eternally grateful. Any amount is appreciated, and I hope you will share this request far and wide.
