Austin Soundwaves violinists Monica Balleza (15), Kimberly Caballero (14), and bassist Draylen Mason (14) earned spots with the 2014 Sacramento Youth Symphony Summer Chamber Music Workshop, an intensive, 7-day, immersive program in chamber and orchestral classical music. Students are receiving partial tuition assistance through the generosity of the Sacramento Youth Symphony, but will need to cover travel, food, transportation, the remainder of tuition, and other expenses.
In addition to the $1900 through this crowdrise campaign, students will be performing at local fairs and markets and selling food to raise the remaining $600 to fully fund their trip. Total cost of the trip to cover all costs amounts to $2500.
Founded by the Hispanic Alliance for the Performing Arts in 2011, Austin Soundwaves seeks to provide quality music education to the underserved community of East Austin, Texas. Inspired by the famed El Sistema program in Venezuela--whose most famous graduate is Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director, Gustavo Dudamel--the over 100 Austin Soundwaves students receive daily instruction in a number of classical instruments through group lessons, sectionals, music theory, chamber, orchestra, and band rehearsals.
