THE STORY:

I've had a couple dear friends encourage me to share my thoughts and experiences as a cancer survivor, fighter, and the sadness, strength and struggles that come with it. I always believed that I've been given these struggles for a reason, but there was always a fear of what others would think, "she's doing a blog like others", or my favorite, "she isn't that sick". Well a little girl named Austyn, my 12 year old niece told me to be brave, so here goes -

People first need to understand that cancer has many faces. It can come at you with vengeance, or it can slowly invade your body. In 2004 I was first diagnosed with cervical cancer which was treated with surgery to remove the confined area. Cancer cells never truly leave, they like to play an evil game of hide and seek so in 2008 these cells decided to emerge from their hiding spot, my uterus. I was in the hospital within a week receiving a hysterectomy, follow up treatments of chemo and radiation and the chance of ever giving birth to a child was stripped from me. Forward to the present, I have Chondrosarcoma, which is basically cancer of the cartilage. The tumor on my spine causes at times extreme pain and was recently discovered to effect the nerve that works the Cerebrum and Cerebellum of the brain. Truth is, if it doesn't spread I could be a person living with cancer but the chances of paralysis and Alzheimer's like symptoms are high. So what do I choose to do?

I choose to live! I choose to fight! I will ride my bike and walk my dogs. I will sit outside and breathe the air and feel the sun on my skin. I will start doing things on the bucket list, not because I think I'm going to die but rather, someday is no longer a word in my vocabulary. I will choose to keep negative situations and people away. I choose to fight with positivity, motivation, love and friendship. Now is the time to make a difference and stand up for others fighting, surviving and dying from this disease. I'm hoping to inspire and motivate people with ANY struggles they have and to realize that the stronger you are mentally the better your life will become.
