I would like to introduce myself, my name is Marc Barton. I am a Sergeant in the United States Army and have been for over 15 years. The reason I am contacting you is because of the launch of the iPad Mini later this month. I have a 7 year old son and a 4 year old daugter that have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Integration Disorder. Both of these conditions are relat
ively new to the medical community and new things are being learned about them every day. My children must visit occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech therapist and a couple of others. They literally have some form or another of therapy everyday of the week.

The reason I am contacting you is because last year, on of their therapists mentioned that the new xbox Kinect might be good for them because they cannot work with joysticks (yes, I am that old that i still refer to it as a joystick) or game controllers. I waited in line for 7 hours on Thanksgiving night to get in to a store and buy one. And it absolutely worked, with some time, they now interact with games, and do things that constantly amaze me.

We slowly moved them to computer games, however they were having problems controlling a mouse. I started to let them play with my android phone and saw how easily they could master a touch screen. They were playing games on Zoodles which promotes educational games for kids and they were learning new things every day. I saw my kids go from socially quiet to extremely extrovert. One of their therapist recommended an iPad and let them play on hers. It is a very incredible educational tool. Its used to teach them, reward them, and I do believe speed up their therapy.

I thought about purchasing the iPad but 1) simply too expensive to put in the hands of a 4 & 7 year old and 2) the 9 1/2" screen is just too big for them. Then i heard you were coming out with a less expensive and smaller version and I thought it would be perfect because its in between the size of my phone and the iPad thats out now. Absolutely Perfect for small hands. However, Miltary Tricare does not pay to get these kinds of devices for children with Autism.

I have started fundraising efforts with friends and family so that I can purchase 2 when they come out and hopefully get them by christmas. However I would like to expand these efforts to other children with Autism so that they can get their hands on these wonderful educational tools. Maybe if a program could be set aside to donate refurbished or used iPads to special needs children. I thought you might be able to assist me with this.
