For over 25 years, the Autism Society Central Virginia, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has served as the region’s premier source of education, advocacy, services, and support for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), their families and friends, and interested professionals. Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability that occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Many individuals with autism have significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. The prevalence rate of ASD continues to rise, and currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2014) estimates that an average of 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys) in the United States has an ASD. There is no known cause or cure for autism spectrum disorder. The Autism Society Central VA is committed to meaningful participation and self-determination in all aspects of life for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, at any age and any stage. To fulfill our mission to improve the lives of all affected by autism by maximizing the self- sufficiency, independence, and quality of life for all living with autism, the Autism Society Central Virginia offers... • Free monthly workshops and chapter meetings featuring expert speakers • Free child/teen care at monthly meetings • Special interest groups to meet the diverse needs of individuals with autism and their families • Information and referral services through our website or by phone or e-mail • A comprehensive lending library • A monthly newsletter to over 600 professionals, families, and interested individuals • Weekly e-mail blasts with important events and reminders to a list of over 4000 individuals and groups • Advocacy and legislative efforts on behalf of the autism community • Scholarships for social/recreational programs for children, youth, and adults with ASD • Two annual conferences on topics of interest to our membership • Several monthly social and recreational opportunities for individuals with ASD and their families, including Lego/game clubs, bowling, a preschool music group, and a new program for siblings in 2015! • Outreach activities including an Spring Family Picnic, Summer Pool Party, Winter Holiday Event, and tickets to Special events like ballgames and shows All funds raised here, stay right here in the local Central VA area!
