Our Mission

Improving the Lives of All Affected by Autism

For 49 years, the Autism Society of Northwest Ohio has served as the premier source of education, advocacy, and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), their families and friends, and professionals who support them in Northwest Ohio.  We are a chapter of the Autism Society of America, the oldest and largest grassroots autism organization in the country.  Our counties include:  Lucas, Defiance, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Williams, and Wood.

ASD is a neurobiological disorder of the brain that occurs in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, and that causes significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges.  More people than ever before are being diagnosed with autism, and currently, the CDC estimates that 1 in 68 children born today in the United States will be diagnosed with ASD.  Although there are some treatments, there is no known cure, and autism remains a lifelong disability.  Autism is also a misunderstood disorder.  Public awareness is needed to promote understanding of this disorder, as well as compassion for those affected, so that individuals will not only maximize their potential, but also be able to live, work, play, and worship freely in the community just like non-disabled peers.

The Autism Society of Northwest Ohio provides support, education, advocacy and services to 12 counties in northwest Ohio, including:

  • Information about autism and referrals to autism-specific and “autism friendly” resources;
  • One-on-one in-person support for families;
  • Making visual schedules and supports for families;
  • A six week summer extended school year program;
  • Educational programs for parents and professionals, including our Practical Solutions to Everyday Challenges in Autism Workshops;
  • A social group for young adults on the spectrum;
  • Sibshop for brothers and sisters of individuals with ASD;
  • Autism training for law enforcement and other professional and community groups.
