We've reached our Purple Purse Challenge goal! Now let's double the amount to help twice as many survivors in need following the devastation  See more

THE STORY:

AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse) provides transformational, life-saving services to survivors of abuse and their families. AVDA’s mission is to end family violence by advocating for the safety and self-determination of victims, promoting accountability for abusers and fostering a community response to abuse. Since its founding in 1980, AVDA has provided advocacy, safety planning, counseling and free legal representation for more than 80,000 survivors and manages the largest Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) in Texas.

AVDA is participating in The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse® Challenge, a friendly fundraising competition among select organizations providing support to survivors of domestic violence and financial abuse in communities across the United States. AVDA is one of more than 220 nonprofits competing to raise the most money with the top teams winning grand prize cash donations.

All funds raised by AVDA through the Purple Purse Challenge will go directly to AVDA clients impacted by Hurricane Harvey through the newly established AVDA Victim Relief Fund. Our goal for the Challenge is $5,000, providing 10 survivors and their families with $500 each for such immediate needs as housing assistance, childcare, medical bills, transportation and lost wages to help alleviate homelessness, lack of transportation, and other economic challenges for one of Houston’s most susceptible populations. Victims of domestic violence are particularly vulnerable in times of crisis, and incidences of domestic abuse often skyrocket following a natural disaster.

AVDA has already begun aiding survivors, but we need your support to help other survivors like Rosa, who was evacuated by boat during the storm. Luckily, she and her children were safe, but she lost everything in the flood. Her apartment was completely destroyed, and since she worked at the apartment complex, she lost her place of employment and wages, too. She is currently living with friends.

And there is Tiffany, whose home also flooded. She is currently living in a hotel and is working while trying to decide how to put her life back together.

Karen, too, had to evacuate due to flooding. Her home was damaged, and all of her furniture was destroyed alongside her two children’s clothing and toys. She applied to FEMA and received emergency food stamps only. She isn’t able to return to work for the time being because her job site is down.

The list goes on…we have been able to help Tiffany, Karen, and Rosa through the AVDA Victim Relief Fund, but need additional funds to help our other clients impacted by the storm.  Please consider a gift today to support the AVDA Victim Relief Fund!
