A Voice for Korah: Our Trip to Ethiopia
Organized by: Stephanie Anderson
EVENT DATE May 25, 2016
Hi, we're Aubrey and Stephanie! We are sisters from Springfield, Missouri, who are taking a missions trip to Korah, Ethiopia in May 2016 through North Point Church and an amazing organization called I Pour Life. We need to raise $5,750 ($2,875 each) to be able to go on this trip and would love to have your support! (See full trip costs below.)
Why We're Going: The Story of Korah
Korah is a small village just outside Addis Ababa, the capitol city of Ethiopia. Korah was founded over 75 years ago by people inflicted with leprosy seeking treatment in Addis. Three generations later, over 100,000 people live in Korah, most of whom have leprosy, HIV/AIDS, or are widows or orphans. Their extreme poverty has forced many of the villagers to forage through a local trash dump to find enough food to survive each day.
In all of Ethiopia, 89% of the people live on under $2 a day, and 46% of people live on under $1 a day. In partnership with the Ethiopian government and through the help of I Pour Life's 10 x 10 program*, we will be helping to give the people of Korah their voice back, teaching them to become sustainable and giving them the ability to provide for their families. The women who currently participate in 10×10 have gone from making $.30 a day to 7 to 9 dollars a day. Some have even saved enough to provide for themselves and their families, as well as rent an apartment! These women are learning that though they may have been cast out by their society, they are not useless or unwanted. They have a calling, a purpose, and they are able to provide for their families and lift themselves out of poverty.
To learn more about Korah, please watch the short video we've included with the photos on this page, or visit I Pour Life's website.
What We'll Be Doing on Our Trip: Family Empowerment
We believe the people of Korah can be equipped with the tools to lift themselves out of poverty. Instead of giving them hand outs, we'll be giving them a hand up. Together, our team will empower them towards holistic sustainability by repairing homes, visiting 10X10 businesses, taking part in family and youth empowerment efforts, and feeding a village.
