THE STORY:

A 7.8 magnitude Earthquake hit Nepal on 25th April devastating indigenous communities. The death toll has surpassed 7000 and is expected to rise as rescuers reach remote communities. An estimated 8 million people are affected with the most marginalized most at risk. The earthquake has resulted in a humanitarian crisis demanding both national and international support. The Nepal Government and the international community must prioritise and increase aid to these villages. The Nepalese Indigenous communities are also aware that we must continue our own support and re-build our own communities. The Time is running out.

The worst hit areas are home to indigenous peoples, as the epicenter- Barpak village of Gorkha is a Gurung indigenous Village. Hardest hit districts include Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Kavrepalanchok, Dhading Gorkha and Kathmandu valley these districts are indigenous people’s lands, mostly Tamang, Gurung and Newar and marginalized communities – Danuwar,Majhi,Thami, Kumali etc. Many indigenous community’s houses are completely destroyed people are in urgent need of clean drinkable water. And are counting on your support!

National Indigenous Women Forum (NIWF) in its partnership with Centre for Environmental Action and Development(CEAD), are empowering indigenous women through delivering innovative technologies to assess water quality, filter drinking water, and promote proper hygiene and sanitation. Finally, our sisters will continue to support long-term recovery and rebuild our communities in ways that honor our indigenous knowledge and builds greater sustainability.
