THE STORY:

Women's Theatre Festival of Memphis is a 3 day event showcasing performances and highlighting the contributions of women in theatre arts. The Gyneka Awards Gala kicks off the festival, followed by 2 days of workshops, readings, one acts and full length production performances written and directed by women and about women.  There are only two theatre festivals that we know about that do this, one in India and one in Los Angeles.

The festival is for all to attend but it is imperative that we hear stories from a woman's point of view.  We need to support this opportunity for women in theatre to be heard and recognized.  Only 20% of professional theatre artists are women.  17% of produced plays are written by women.  16% of produced plays are directed by women.  Yet 69% of ticket purchasers are women and Broadway shows written by women are 18% more profitable than those written by men.

This year twelve women will be honored for their contribution to the world of theatre, help us honor them.
