THE STORY:

A Yard & A Half Landscaping Cooperative, Inc. is a worker cooperative of women and Central American immigrants, raising funds through donations to our fiscal sponsor and main funder, the Cooperative Fund of New England, to purchase our successful, 25-year old landscaping business from the retiring owner. That's right: make a directed donation here to CFNE, the Co-op gets the funds, and YOU get a tax deduction. Everyone wins!

ABOUT US

A Yard & A Half Landscaping is a design / build / maintain landscaping company founded by Eileen Michaels in 1988. Over the years, she grew the company to over $2 million in annual sales by guaranteeing all of her work and investing in her employees. In preparation for her retirement, she offered the employees the chance to buy the company, and we incorporated as a worker-owned cooperative. Recognized as a "Winning Workplace" by Inc. Magazine in 2010, the company has historically operated with open books, shared profits with employees, and involved employees in decision-making, so the cooperative model is a natural step for us.

Our mission is to design, build and maintain beautiful outdoor spaces that enrich lives – for our customers, our employees, and our community & environment.

Our values are integrity, pride, determination, humor, harmony, generosity, equality and opportunity.

Our vision is the creation of a successful, worker-owned cooperative whose triple bottom line of people, profits, and planet allows us to share more fully of the opportunities that we have worked for and been blessed with.

See an example of our pro bono community work in the video below, showing the transformation of The Children's Room in Arlington, MA, a center for grieving children and teens.

GET INVOLVED

We have already secured commitments for 87% of the funds needed for both the purchase price and working capital. Worker-owner equity and deposits on 2014 contracts will supply much of the additional working capital. To supplement this, our goal is to raise $15,000 in donations by Dec 31.
