Baby Ava's Mending Heart
Organized by: Paula Clark
My daughter, Melissa first learned of possible problems with Baby Ava's heart back in December, 2013, during an ultrasound. She then went to see a fetal cardiatric specialist in Sioux Falls, SD in January 2014, where they did an echocardiogram of Ava's heart in the womb. At first they found two holes in her heart and thought she may have Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, but couldn't see the left side of heart well. On March 20th, 2014 we found out that Ava had no left heart, and would require immediate care and attention after birth. That was when we learned we were going from Rapid City, SD all the way to Ann Arbor, MI to CS Motts Children and Women's Hospital, where her chance of survival would be at an 85%-90% chance. This was a long trek for us, as we traveled 18 hours to get here two weeks before Melissa's scheduled delivery. Baby Ava was born on April 18, 2014 and had her first open heart surgery at only four days old! She has struggled off and on & is now stable enough that they are going to "sprint" her off of the ventilator with hopes she does well so they can remove the ventilator. She is a fighter and I can see the inner strength she possesses! She will need that for she will go through two more surgeries, at 4-6 months old & 18-24 months old. These three surgeries are a 'bridge' to hopefully get her through until she can receive a heart transplant! Please help Baby Ava & Melissa as they journey down this road of the unknown!!
