Last year I had the amazing opportunity to run the Boston Marathon. For me personally, it is one of my greatest accomplishments, one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was a beautiful day, the spectators stretched for miles, and I ran a PR, sub-3 hour marathon, re-qualifying for Boston again this year. When my family joined me at the family meet-up area near the finish line, I was elated, ready to celebrate what was the culmination of months and months of training, fueled by the love and support of my family, and the amazing energy along the marathon course. But soon, in an instance, everything would change. What we would eventually learn, what we all know now, is that the callous act of two cowards had ended the marathon, but more tragically, had changed the lives of countless individuals, forever. Beyond the senselessness of it all, what really sunk deep into the hearts of all of us runners, those of us that just a short time before had run the final stretch through that cheerful and enthusiastic crowd, is that the victims, in essence, our fans...the very folks that came to cheer us on.
I have many reasons for returning to Boston this year. There's the chance to run again, to push myself again. Last year's achievements came with an asterisk of guilt...the complexity of having an amazing personal experience and victory, but knowing the tragedy that marked that day. There's the chance to come together as a community of runners and loved ones in the community of a city that every year turns its attentions to the streets, to watch the 'everyman' run a race that's more about personal goals than any sense of winning. But more than anything, this year, I am returning to Boston to remember and honor the victims.
It is to that extent that I am raising funds to support the victims. I am thankful to have the opportunity to run Boston again this year. As I don't have any fundraising obligations, this is purely to support those that were affected by last year's tragedy. I hope that you will consider contributing.
Also, I hope that you will also join me in running this Patriot's Day, April 21st, in the Boston Marathon World Run: http://tinyurl.com/kulsju8
Thank you for your support!
Last year we came to run. This year we run to remember!
