My name is Dylan Meyer, I'm a 5th-year PhD student at UT Austin and running has been part of my life since I was a kid. It all started with jogging to and from the end of the drive with my dad and sister as a portion of our martial arts training and expanding to longer routes as I progressed through high school. In college and graduate school, individual sports seemlessly became an emotional and physical outlet for me and made me realize how hard and far I can push myself beyond my assumed capacity. I've now tested myself in a myriad of obstacle course races (Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Rugged Maniac, etc.), long-distance relay races (Capitol2Coast, Texas Independence Relay, and Ragnar Austin), and, most recently, the Austin 70.3 Ironman and, in every case, I was taken to school about my own ability and mental grit. My experience has convinced me of the capacity for physical exertion to positively affect a person's self-confidence and outlook.
Two years ago, I began volunteering with the Austin chapter of a non-profit organization called Back on My Feet (BoMF), which "combats homelessness through the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources." The basis of BoMF are the volunteer-led, early-morning runs that create an intersection between the local running and homeless communities and provide opportunity of encouragement and interaction between volunteers and members. This simple activity promotes physical activity, health awareness, and mental commitment in the members, which is a stepping stone to more complex life improvements, and develops natural, accountability-partner relationships. A member's commitment to BoMF grants them access to a greater range of additional resources that include financial advice, housing and employment resources, and, every runner's favorite item, new running gear.
Coming to, what I view as, a culmination of my running career, I decided in early 2016 months ago that it was time for me to get a full marathon under my belt and registered myself for the Austin Marathon on February 19th, 2017. Prior to the break, I heard that BoMF was looking for fundracers to run for a cause and immediately jumped at the chance to benefit this amazing organization that I've become acquainted with. And so, I now find myself in the privileged position of running for a cause greater than myself. Help me meet my goal of raising $500 for BoMF by race day by doanting above.
