It is 5:00 a.m. in Somerville and we are about to run 4 miles. Everyone is so excited and cheerful as we get ready for our usual morning run. Running with this group of people has become an important part of my routine. But if you saw me 2 years ago, I couldn’t finish even a mile. This is all because of Back on My Feet. Back on My Feet (BOMF) is a non-profit organization that combats homelessness through the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources.
I have been a volunteer for BOMF since 2015. I was amazed at the awesome community of runners where everyone was supportive. Right from the start, they were very encouraging and helped me finish my first 3-mile run. I realized that the organization’s mission of using running to overcome homelessness can really work. I firmly believe that if you can show your persistence by getting up early in the morning and run, you can become stronger and overcome any obstacles in life.
By joining BOMF, members get access to many beneficial resources such as job training and housing initiatives after they show up consistently in morning runs with their groups. Witnessing firsthand how BOMF has helped members transform their lives is a life-changing experience for me. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we meet at 5:45 in the morning to run together. It is an incredible feeling when you see members only able to walk when they first join us, but after a few weeks they are able to run their first 5k races. Running/walking in the morning with a group of supportive people gives members a sense of community and a structured routine so that they can start their day on the right foot.
The same transformation happened to me when I started running with Back on My Feet. After two years of running consistently, I was able to finish my first marathon in April 2016. I feel confident that I could run another marathon and there is no a better way to give back to this great organization than by racing the NYC Marathon.
Ever since I joined BOMF, I have been involved with raising awareness of BOMF by running numerous races and raising funds for the organization. I joined the Young Professional Board for the Boston Chapter to raise awareness about the organization and how it helps alleviate homelessness by providing housing and job opportunities to members.
By choosing to give to Back on My Feet NYC, you are helping to raise critical awareness and funds to make a difference in the lives of our members. Back on My Feet helps individuals experiencing homelessness change their lives by boosting up their confidence and reconnecting them with the community. I’m still running with Team Somerville every week and trying to get as many members to run a marathon as I can. Together, mile by mile, we can make a difference.
