SUNDAY FRIENDS’ BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE

Back to School is one of the most happening times at Sunday Friends. With the upcoming school year just around the corner, Sunday Friends is acquiring new backpacks with all the essential school supplies for our children to earn.

They Earn the School Supplies?

Yes. The children who participate in our Sunday Friends programs are from very low-income families.  Their parents support their education to the best of their ability but cannot afford to purchase school supplies.  Many of the children have, in the past, had to return to school in the fall with missing or raggedy backpacks and a lot of embarrassment.  Sunday Friends turns that around.  However, unlike many other organizations...

We do not give backpacks and school supplies as handouts!

Instead, we make it possible for the children, with their parents’ help, to earn them.  Now, instead of returning to school with shame, the kids return with pride and eagerness to learn.  They treasure the backpacks and school supplies and care for them more because they earned them themselves.

How Does It Work?

The Back to School program, like any other programs at Sunday Friends, stems from our unique model – a working alternative to charity.

Every Sunday, parents alongside their children take part in a lot of community service and fun learning activities. Giving their best through each activity earns them tickets, which they can use to purchase basic necessities – or they can save their tickets in the Sunday Friends Bank. It is these tickets that our children will use to “purchase” their new backpacks with all the necessary school supplies for the school year ahead.

Where Do the School Supplies Come From?

This is where Sunday Friends welcomes supporters like you to join hands with us. School supplies are the essential tools of success for our children. Please help us make sure they all have what they need to make the most of their education this fall and beyond.

Sunday Friends’ Back to School shopping days for our families will be held on August 4 through August 18 in 2013. We would like to receive most donated school supplies by July 28.

What we need most to fill the backpacks:

  • Zipper Binders
  • Binder Paper
  • USB Memory Sticks
  • Mechanical Pencils
  • Pencil Leads (for Mechanical Pencils)
  • Pens, Markers, Crayons, Highlighters
  • Mini Staplers
  • Scissors
  • Glue Sticks
  • Calculators
  • AA and AAA Batteries
  • Erasers, Pencil Sharpeners

Talk to us if you are considering or planning a back-to-school drive. We can provide decorated collection boxes, customizable flyers and a pickup/delivery service.


Why Didn’t we Set a Target Fund Amount?

As you may have noticed by now, there are ways you can contribute beyond donating monetarily. You can also organize a drive (talk to us) or shop and deliver backpacks and school supplies directly to Sunday Friends. Please feel free to choose the most meaningful way for you to help the children of Sunday Friends.

About Sunday Friends

Mission Statement: Sunday Friends empowers families in need to break the cycle of poverty. Children and parents earn basic necessities while they contribute to their community, learn life skills and develop self-sufficiency.

What if you could give opportunities instead of handouts?  That’s what Sunday Friends – a non-religious, nonprofit organization – does through its programs for very low-income families. 

Sunday Friends does this in a unique way.  It has created an integrated “learning economy” that offers families a “working alternative to charity”.  Children and their parents are provided opportunities to earn the things they need.  They do this with volunteers through a variety of collaborative, carefully crafted activities, such as making gifts for children in hospitals, preparing healthy meals, cleaning the grounds of the host facility and writing letters to the Sunday Friends community.  These giving-back activities, along with the earning opportunities and the skills training, have been shown to promote positive outlooks, healthy productive lifestyles and self-sufficient futures. 

Sunday Friends’ approach of giving opportunities instead of handouts helps families break the poverty cycle.  Parents and their children are able to practice money management and practical life skills that they can apply in their schools, workplaces and homes throughout the week. This fosters developmental assets in children.  As program participants experience repeated positive outcomes for their efforts, they grow to understand that they have the power to take control of their lives and to make a difference in the lives of others. This realization has instilled the needed confidence in many Sunday Friends participants to make successful, life-changing decisions.
