The Backpack Crew is working to alleviate the growing number of local kids that are coming to school hungry on Monday mornings! Many people are not aware that children are not eating properly when they do not have their school breakfast and/or lunch to depend on. This organization was started in one school after Hurricane Sandy but has quickly grown over the past four school years. Currently they are supporting families in eight different schools in Middletown, Highlands, Atlantic Highlands, and Red Bank NJ. As a ministry of the United Methodist Church of Red Bank, the Backpack Crew is an all volunteer organization and has a food pantry located within the church. This means there is very little overhead and any money raised is used to purchase food that is needed in addition to food drives. The concept is simple: get food straight into the hands that need it! We pack backpacks every week for children plus all family members and deliver it to our school nurses. We do not know any information about our families except for how many people are in each family. The school nurse hands out our backpacks to the children to bring home every Friday. The emptys are returned to the nurse at the beginning of the next week to be refilled. We try to keep the food we pack kid-friendly and healthy as possible. We also work hard to give a variety by rotating items such as cereal, bagels, pancake mix, english muffins, fruit, etc. With feeding around 180 children every week plus parents, we go through a tremendous amount of food! And there are more that need our support! So help us with our mission of keeping kids awesome by ensuring they are eating properly 7 days a week. And to spread awareness that there are food insecure children right here in Monmouth County! Thank you!!
