BENEFITING: SISTERS OF THE SON MINISTRY
Apostle Tonya and Elder Jerry Smallwood founded the Sisters of The SON Ministries in 1995. Our primary focus is to empower others to achieve all God created them to be through teaching the unadulterated Word of God. We demonstrate the Love of God through Christian outreach; with an emphasis on underprivileged, underserved, and "at-risk" youth.
In July of 2014, we travelled to Lagos, Nigeria to attend an International Ministers conference. During our fourteen days in Nigeria, God provided us with several opportunities to Minister to the Spiritual needs of His people there by delivering His Word to the masses. We were Blessed to be able to spend a considerable amount of time with the beautiful people of Lagos, Nigeria.
More than ninety percent of the population live in extreme poverty, with these households earning less then $200US dollars per year. We walked among the poorest of the poor in this amazing country. We have travelled extensively and have never seen such poverty. Much of what we saw sickened our stomachs, weakened our knees, brought tears to our eyes, and caused our hearts to ache.
Amongst the one-room brick huts, the tin shacks and the cardboard lean-tos; the outdoor cooking campfires and the grass sleeping mats on dirt floors; the un-covered open-air latrines and the terribly rutted mud roads, dwells a people with an absolutely amazing Faith. We have never seen a more fervent belief in God nor a more powerful Worship and Praise lifted up to God, as we witnessed in this place.
We were particularly struck by the love the children displayed for God, and their thirst for knowledge. They looked forward to church services, always proceeded by Christian instruction and often lasting more than four hours. Always engaging, the children seemed to never get bored with the services or the instruction. Simply put, we fell in love with the children. Through our interactions with the children, their parents, and Ministry leaders we came to realize the overwhelming need for assistance with the education of the children of Nigeria. Education is not free in Nigeria and the majority of its children never receive a formal education. This land is filled with children who when asked what they want the most, will respond "To go to school"
We spent many hours observing children in the church and classroom setting and witnessed a desire and respect for education that is truly uncommon among elementary school children anywhere. We know the children of Nigeria have little real hope of escaping the abject poverty in which so very many of them live without education. Our experiences and subsequent research led us to adopt three Christian elementary schools in Lagos, Nigeria. We have provided books, backpacks, and school supplies as well as financial assistance to provide student scholarships and facility expansion. We are returning to Nigeria to Minister to the spiritual needs of the school children we have adopted, their families and communities as well as expand on the work we began in 2014. We pray you will find our efforts worthy of your support.
