BENEFITING: ART CREATION FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN INC
Last year I came to all of you and asked you to support a project I was taking part in in Haiti. That trip was such a success that I went and fell in love with a country and a bunch of amazing kids! I am now a volunteer for Art Creation Foundation for Children in Jacmel, Haiti and next month I will be returning, this time on my own, to spend time with ACFFC and the best kids in the world (yes I am biased)!
ACFFC is an arts education program for street kids based in Jacmel, Haiti. ACCFC provides each of our 100 children with daily meals (many of them would not eat regularly without the program) and safe drinking water, medical care and other basic necessities. Education in Haiti is not free but each child at ACFFC is provided with tuition, school supplies, books, uniforms and after school tutoring. In addition to providing for daily needs ACFFC also recognizes the importance of a safe home to the success of our children and has repaired or built homes and/or water treatment systems for some of the families of our children.
The core mission of the ACFFC uses art to inspire our students to be independent, productive members of society. Our goal is self-sufficiency learned though competency in the arts. Youth in our program learn to become master artisans, painters, photographers and mosaic artist. Through these skills they are changing the face of their home city, Jacmel. They are creating their own future!
ACFFC does all of this with very little and while remaining fiscally responsible throughout. We are able to provide all of what I have mentioned above for only $1,500 per child per year, that is only $125 a month to assure that a child has three meals a day, has access to safe water and receives and education and training for their future. All of this while instilling in them a strong sense of family and community.
In additional to all the other wonderful projects we have in the works right now, we are in the process of procuring a permanent building for the program and the kids, a place where they know they can stay without the threat of the rent going to high and having to move, a stable environment where our youth can learn and grow and be successful!
I have never known courage and strength and hope of the likes that you see in these children. I thought I knew what poverty was, I thought I knew what struggle was, and then I went to Haiti. And yet in spite of overwhelming challenges, these kids will greet you every day with a smile and a hug and with hope the likes of which I wish for everyone to experience at some point in their lives. (These are the stories of just a few of our kids http://www.acffcjacmelhaiti.com/category/youth-stories/ ).
My goal for this trip is to be able to raise enough money to assure that at least one child is covered for the next year. Now if you all would like to go further than that than don't let me stop you!!
Mèsi anpil !!
