Bakali Mpendo is 14 years of age and living in Uganda.
He lives with his grandmother, Hasifa, who cares for 12 grandchildren. None of Hasifa's granchildren have parents - the main cause being death due to AIDS, so the burden of care on Hasifa's shoulders is enormous!
Bakalis'grandmother Hasifa is desperately poor, without income, without money for food, or safe shelter.
When we first met this family, the children were sleeping on the ground, starving, had no clothing and had no schooling. We have since been able to raise funds for food, soap, clothing, beds and send some of the children to school. The family's shelter (a traditional hut) remains in a dangerous state of repair due to having no income. It is in such a dangerous state that when it rains, the family sleeps outside or at a neighbours house for fear of their home collapsing on them.
Bakali is keen to learn a trade. He feels embarassed to go to infants school to start school at his age, but he is a very smart and motivated young man who wises to learn carpentry. He is very interested in helping his family by assisting with repairs to their home, and to be able to earn an income to continue to support his Grandmother and cousins.
A carpenter in the local community has agreed to train Bakali in the trade. To embark on this life-changing opportunity, Bakali needs to buy tools and pay the tuition fees up front.
If anyone can contribute to Bakali's goal of learning a trade to make a better life for himself and his family, please donate amount you can.
