This Camp has meant SO much to so many for TEN summers now! For most of those years, I've been just one of hundreds of adult volunteers mentoring the girls for one week, teaching them about confidence, how to do a wicked 2-count drum fill, co-operation, the history of music-makers who have come before, respect, how to tune an instrument, vulnerability, how to adjust a microphone, listening, harnessing their creative selves, and most of all to make sure that all of their voices matter, to reinforce constantly that what they can DO, and what they think is more important than how they look. I am so proud to be a part of this movement, and I hope to see it flourish for another TEN years.
Erica Flores, of Girls Rock Austin, has a striking and moving piece on her experience, which closely mirrors my own: http://www.pri.org/stories/2015-06-22/girls-rock-camp-saved-my-life
So, throw down with us on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 from 2-5pm, at Frames in NYC. There'll be white russians, good-natured taunting, hi-fives, turkeys, special guest judges - all in the name of helping Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls' Fairness Fund.
Your inner Dude Abides for Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls! Did I mention the costume competitions, team spirit, & highest fundraising honors?
